March 2020 Meeting

Next Meeting Thursday March 12, 2020

Loyalist College Pioneer building room P13

7:30 – 9:30

Guest Presenter: Donna Edmonds

Contemplative Photography

Some of you may remember Donna from her presentation last year called Finding My Photography Style.

Donna is a mostly self-taught photographer and a very motivated learner. She describes herself as a sponge for knowledge in photography and life in general. She also very much enjoys teaching and doing presentations in the hope of encouraging and inspiring others to keep shooting, learning and enjoying their own photography.

Tonight Donna is going to speak to us on the topic of Contemplative Photography which is essentially about the art of seeing and photographing what the visual world has to offer us. She is also going to speak about visualization and how when we begin with seeing what we normally wouldn’t see as we travel through our everyday lives, we can then become more perceptive and aware of the world in terms of photographic images.

“My goal for my presentations is to entertain, inform and inspire fellow photographers in a format that I know will appeal to all skill levels. I am passionate about encouraging and inspiring photographers, especially those who may be feeling uninspired, discouraged or that they think that they cannot produce good photographs from their everyday lives and the world they live in. My Contemplative Photography presentation is not about showing you my “best” photos but about how you can enjoy the process of photographing anything, anytime, anywhere.”

Guest Presenter

Learning to see

a photographic journey

Raymond Vos

Everyone has a different motive for taking photographs. Some people simply want to record their lives and preserve memories. Others take an artistic approach and want to capture what they are seeing. And some want to tell a story or convey a message. In this particular presentation I want to tell my story of my involvement with my Kenya charity: The Kenya Initiative: From Street To School through my photography. I want to share how my photography has both helped convey my own experience in Kenya and how that experience has pushed me to become a better photographer. I use my Kenya photos for presentations at schools, churches and even Photography clubs! I have regular displays of my Kenya photos at restaurants in Kingston and in my own Art Gallery. There is a supreme satisfaction of selling a framed photo and also knowing that the money will allow Kenyan students to continue their studies in Primary school, High School, College, and University. Photography for me not only tells a story, but makes a story. It makes a story happen in someone’s life!

Monthly Theme

This month our theme is “Unexpected”. Don’t worry if you see an error message after the upload. It is just a glitch on the website that we can’t seem to get rid of.

Night Sky Photography presentation and Workshop Postponed

Since the weather forecast is calling for a 100% chance of 30-40mm of rain for Thursday-Friday, we have made the decision to postpone the Night Sky Photography Workshop. Since the presentation is connected with the workshop, we will have some alternative presentations this month.

  • Joseph Leduc will give us one of his intently informative presentations, this time featuring macro photography.
  • Larry Tayler will take us on a wonderful photo journey to Tasmania and Australia.
  • We will have time to view and discuss our attempts at street photography.
  • And finally, we will have the opportunity to view and score the images that have been submitted for our upcoming exhibition at the Parrott Art Gallery.

This should be a full and interesting evening!

Feature Presentation:  Night Sky Photography

Postponed due to rain

Ariel Estulin

Ariel Estulin is an award winning photographer and photo educator. Primarily interested in landscapes, he travels the world seeking out beauty in those wild and remote places on earth that still remain untouched by civilization and where nature commands ultimate attention.

Self-taught as a photographer, he spent time with Freeman Patterson, Canada’s renowned photographer, to learn the art of making great photographs. His training as a graphic designer continually shapes what he sees through the lens in order that elements such as light, shape and colour all work in harmony. His never-ending search for off-beat adventures have led him to explore the Himalayas of Nepal and Ladakh, along with South America’s Patagonia. He feels right at home paddling his canoe or hiking in his backyard, the country of Canada.

As a photo educator, his goal is for students to come away with not just better photographs, but a better understanding of photography, better compositions and most importantly, a skill set they now have and can use on future adventures.

Ian Dickinson : Bird Photography

Ian Dickinson discovered wildlife photography after retiring 10 years ago. Photographing birds brought him closer to nature and changed the way he saw the natural world. Ian has photographed 320 of the 425 birds ever seen in Canada, most right here in the Quinte area. His presentation ‘Photobirding – how combining Birding and Photography changed my life’, is illustrated with images of birds that are all around us, but most people have never noticed because they don’t know where, when and how to look. Ian will try to get you ‘hooked on birds’ through your telephoto lens.

The Grizzly Bear

Grizzly (or brown) bears are North America’s largest terrestrial carnivore. Size and weight vary considerably with region, but the largest bears are typically found in coastal areas. The grizzly bear gets its name from the light tipped guard hairs which give them a grizzled appearance. In the spring grizzlies emerge from their winter dens very hungry – during this season the grizzlies of the Khutzeymateen focus on eating sedge grass, skunk cabbage and roots near the shoreline of the inlet. They can also be seen foraging in the intertidal zone for clams and shore crabs. Coastal grizzly bears are powerful swimmers and in their estuary home are in and out of the water almost constantly. They can often be seen snorkelling with just their heads below the water.

Grizzly bears are solitary animals for most of the year. However, in spring it is mating season and adult bears congregate. Female grizzlies stay with their cubs for up to three years, so often in the Khutzeymateen in the spring we will see female bears with cubs.

On the coast grizzly bears enter their dens to hibernate in late October/early November, and cubs are born in the dens in the deep of winter. Typically the bears emerge from the dens in early spring. Female grizzlies on the coast have between 1 and 3 cubs.

Grizzly bears have a great sense of smell and phenomenal hearing. Contrary to folklore, grizzlies can also see very well and their vision is comparable to humans. They use their powerful senses to locate food and to detect danger.

We find that the best time period for viewing grizzlies in the Khutzeymateen is from mid-May through to mid-June. During this time the bears are normally present in relatively large numbers and exhibit (and share with us) an amazingly wide array of behaviours, including courting and mating behaviour, dominance struggles between young males and their older counterparts, mother-cub interactions, and more. At this time of year the sedges and grasses are still reasonably short and don’t obscure the bears, making for both ideal bear viewing and bear photography conditions. As an added bonus, the hours of daylight at this northerly latitude during this May-June time period are very extended, thus giving us many hours to view the bears each day.

Travelling to the beautiful Khutzeymateen Valley and sharing a few days with the grizzlies of the Khutzeymateen is a unique and unforgettable experience that you will cherish forever.
